What is EPA 608 certification?
It is the federal technician certification required by Section 608 of the Clean Air Act (40 CFR Part 82, Subpart F) for anyone who maintains, services, repairs, or disposes of stationary refrigeration or air-conditioning equipment that could release refrigerant — including connecting gauges or adding and removing refrigerant. It applies nationwide with no state-by-state variation. Motor vehicle air conditioning is covered by a separate program, Section 609.
How many questions are on the EPA 608 exam, and what score do I need to pass?
Each section — Core, Type I, Type II, and Type III — is 25 multiple-choice questions, and regulation requires a 70% score, which works out to 18 of 25 correct. Universal certification means passing all four sections (100 questions) under proctored conditions. If you pass Core plus only some Type sections, you are certified for the Types you passed and can retake just the sections you failed.
Which EPA 608 certification type do I need?
Type I covers factory-sealed small appliances holding 5 pounds of refrigerant or less, such as household refrigerators, window units, and vending machines. Type II covers high-pressure equipment — residential split systems, heat pumps, rooftop units, and supermarket refrigeration — and is what most HVAC technicians need. Type III covers low-pressure equipment, chiefly centrifugal chillers. Universal covers all of it and is widely preferred by employers because it removes any question about scope.
Does EPA 608 certification expire?
No. The EPA states that Section 608 technician certification credentials do not expire — there is no renewal and no continuing-education requirement. Your wallet card comes from the EPA-approved organization that administered your exam (such as ESCO Institute or Mainstream Engineering), and replacements come from that same organization.
Can I take the EPA 608 exam online or open book?
Only Type I may be earned through an unproctored open-book exam, and the pass mark is higher: 84% (21 of 25) on each section instead of 70%. Core, Type II, Type III, and Universal must be taken proctored — either in person or online with a live remote proctor — and an open-book Core cannot later count toward Universal certification.
